Cory deserves a big award for all the projects he does around the house. :) I have wanted a pizza oven for years and Cory can literally build anything.....so he just finished this on Saturday while I was at work.
Around 2 years ago, we started this project. One of our friends operates a concrete truck and was able to get us a little bit of free concrete that was left over from a job they had just finished.
It stayed a concrete slab for a long time while we did other projects in the yard...mainly the gardens and greenhouse and arbors.
Cory laid the block for the stand and poured both the concrete floor plus the insulating floor of vermiculite and portland cement. It remained a plant shelf for that whole year until we could save up for the rest. :)
We were lucky enough to get several gift cards to Lowe's and Home Depot for our wedding. This allowed us to finish the oven. :) We bought fire bricks and high heat mortar to make the dome and a commercial insulating blanket that was recommended to make sure the oven held the heat inside. Then Cory made the little house structure out of steel and concrete board to make it look nice. We filled that with vermiculite. Even when the fire is raging inside, the walls and roof of this structure is cool to the touch.
Cory tiled the counter, welded the roof and stuccoed the outside of the whole structure. The decorative brick on the front came from the old brick at the Nephi house. Lastly, he made the doors for the base, welded the hinges on (so glad I got him that welder for his birthday), stained the doors and attached magnets to the inside to hold them closed.
Cory is a talented man and I'm glad to have him around. :)
We're waiting for our tax return so Cory can build a chicken coop (#1 on Emma's list) and a beehive for the backyard. Maybe he'll even redo the laundry room. :)
We got the plans for the oven dome on Forno Bravo. If you want to build one, it was very helpful....Cory might even help if you'll trade him for labor in our yard. (wink wink)
